Cluster Nachhaltige Energie

Clean, Reliable and Affordable Solutions

Prof. Rik De Doncker

Director of the Sustainable Energy Cluster

From grid planning, automation and control, components and power electronics to high-power traction applications, electrical energy supply on ships, intelligent energy services with the use of cloud platforms, and social, ecological, urban planning and economic aspects such as charging column infrastructure for future e-mobility: the research field of the Sustainable Energy Cluster is very broad.

A sustainable, secure and affordable energy supply – that is the vision of the BMBF research campus “Flexible Electrical Networks” (FEN) and the E.ON Energy Research Center at RWTH Aachen University (E.ON ERC). To this end, researchers at RWTH Aachen Campus Melaten are working on innovative technologies for electrical grids with a high proportion of decentralized and renewable energy sources, because: Power electronics and DC technology play a key role in implementing the energy transition.

Globally unique research center on Campus Melaten

The infrastructure on Campus Melaten allows the network to be expanded with test rigs in the megawatt class. CARL – the Center for Ageing, Reliability and Lifetime Prediction of Electrochemical and Power Electronic Systems – is a unique research center for batteries and power electronics on a global scale. CARL offers, among other things, modern workshops and special laboratories, test rooms for stress tests with air-suspended foundations, special microscopy rooms, climatic chambers as well as a clean room and a drying room.

Another building for the sustainable energy cluster

The structural expansion of the cluster is already being planned. A construction concession for the second construction phase will be awarded in the fourth quarter of 2023:
