The Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) of RWTH Aachen University has received a new two-tube X-ray computer tomograph for its research in the field of metrology. Associated radiation protection housing was delivered from Hamburg in mid-November. The 33-metre-long heavy transport took two days to reach the Production Engineering Cluster and is now in its final location in the WZL’s machine hall.

X-ray computed tomography (xCT) for industrial applications has been studied at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering of RWTH Aachen for many years. xCT is the only non-destructive testing technology that makes it possible to examine both the external and internal properties of components and assemblies in the micrometer range. By using industrial computed tomography, safety-critical components can be tested, product development cycles can be shortened and inline quality control loops can be established. The technology is to be used in research at the WZL, particularly in the development of relevant green technologies such as high-performance batteries for electric cars.

A two-tube computer tomograph of this size is a rarity in the international research landscape. The new X-ray computer tomograph at the WZL makes RWTH Aachen University and Campus Melaten one of the few locations in Europe where such a system is operated.
