Center XL Assembly

Free Float Flawless

Free Float Flawless is the name of a revolutionary concept for a versatile, scalable, configurable and completely adaptable assembly system. Avoiding fixed assembly resources on the shop floor through mobilization, it makes assembly independent from production sequence and spatial restriction. The required dynamic process control is achieved by means of reliable metrological reference systems as well as robust workflow planning and control algorithms. The use of state of the art key technologies (e.g. model-based systems, digital twins, robotic automation, etc.) facilitates an increase in product efficiency and quality, shortens lead times and promotes profitable collaboration between man and machine.
Center XL Assembly

The Center XL Assembly interlinks industrial requirements with university driven research approaches for the development of innovative assembly concepts in line with the Free Float Flawless paradigm.

Prof. Dr. Robert H. Schmitt

Chair of Production Metrology and Quality Management at RWTH Aachen University

Prof. Schmitt (Director of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) and Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT) has held the Chair of Production Metrology and Quality Management (MQ) at RWTH Aachen University since 2004, following many years of working with MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG. His research interests include topics like Industry 4.0 and the development of data and quality driven value creation networks, especially in the context of assembly.

Dr. Walter Kimmelmann

Chair of Production Metrology and Quality Management at RWTH Aachen University

Dr. Kimmelmann is Chief Engineer for the chair of MQ and previously headed up the department Model-Based Systems for five years. He combines profound academic knowledge in the area of metrology and robotics with many years of industry experience in the manufacturing of turnkey assembly systems as well as in product and process planning for automotive components.

Guido Hüttemann

Chair of Production Metrology and Quality Management at RWTH Aachen University

Mr. Hüttemann is Chief Engineer for the chair of MQ and has been in charge of the department Model-Based Systems since July 2017.  Having taken part in numerous research and industry projects, he has accumulated extensive expertise in the field of assembly automation and organization, especially for dynamic line-less assembly systems.
