Official inauguration of the Gate to Campus Melaten
The teaching concept in the CT² Center for Teaching and Training of the Faculty of Medicine at RWTH is unique in the field of medical education and training across Europe. Student training, continuous education for doctors and medical staff as well as the testing of medical devices will all be carried out under one roof. The modern building will have a training center, a demonstration operation room, a multifunctional hall for up to 400 people, learning lounges as well as seminar and office spaces. The innovative methodological concept addresses all medical professions interprofessionally and is for students to learn and deepen clinical/practical skills under real conditions on training objects. This allows essential patient safety concern to be trained for medicine, similar to aviation on (flight) simulators. When used to capacity, a total of approximately 1,200 people will be present in the building as part of the teaching programs. Professor Stefan Uhlig, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine: “As one of the best medical studies in Germany, the Aachen Medicine Model Course of Study follows the faculty’s tradition of being particularly engaged in teaching.”
The solitary building south of the Bio-Medical Engineering Cluster is regarded as a symbolic “Gate to Campus Melaten”. The investment amount for the 7-story building with an effective area of approx. 6,200 square meters is about 20 million euros. The investor of the building is the Frauenrath Group, Heinsberg. The architectural and urban concept was developed by the Dusseldorf architecture office slapa oberholz pszczulny | sop architekten.

CT² Center for Teaching and Training
The innovative teaching and further education building will have a training center, a demonstration operation room, a multifunctional hall for up to 400 people, learning lounges as well as seminar and office spaces. The methodological concept is for students to learn and deepen clinical/practical skills under real conditions on training objects. The Model Medical Education Program, parts of the Dentistry Program and the Masters Program in Biomedical Engineering will all be located here. Besides the teaching programs, the building will also be home to several facilities that support teaching, such as REWE To Go with a café as a meeting point and an apoBank branch. When used to capacity, a total of approximately 1,200 people will be present in the building as part of the teaching programs. Moreover, the building will accommodate the deanery of studies with 25 employees. This building creates an arc of suspense over the Bio-Medical Engineering Cluster: The focus on practical skills in teaching and further education meets fundamental research in the Center for Biohybrid Medical Systems. This creates future-oriented potential for businesses and researchers along the path of innovation which in turn will drive the development of the infrastructure.
Architecture
The prominent building of slapa oberholz pszczulny | sop architekten south of the cluster is regarded as a symbolic „Gate to Campus Melaten“. The detached building with its seemingly technical appearance, surrounded by a shiny metallic building envelope, reflects the high standards of innovation and technology of the RWTH Aachen Campus. The architectural concept, with fully-glazed transparent front facades and a light-flooded atrium is the prelude to the campus behind and promotes communication and user interaction. The inner galleries allow for a multitude of visual relationships from all floors. An attractively designed outdoor facility with a spacious staircase to access the building ensures a high-value stay.
The building’s technical installations are also characterized by an innovative concept. Underground ice storage along with a heat pump and solar absorbers ensure energy-efficient heating and cooling of the building. An air source running underground supplies the inner areas and gallery spaces with fresh air.
